Friends of the Farm Meeting

A kick off meeting for the Friends of the University Farm will be held this Saturday, March 9, from 10–11:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome and the Friends will gather at the farm on Breakfield Road in Sewanee. Children are welcome if accompanied by a parent or a minder. The Farm will provide coffee and hot chocolate, feel free to bring a snack or baked good to share. If weather permits, there will be a tour of the farm at the beginning of the meeting. Due to recent rainy weather, rubber boots might be needed for this part of the day. We will also have a short seed planting activity and attendees will take home some of these seeded plant pots.
The farm is a co-curricular resource for University students and faculty, and often holds guest lectures, tours and laboratory exercises that are not available to the public. Saturday’s gathering will be a meet and greet event, so that members of the community can tell each other and the farm manager how the farm’s resources might also be used for the good of the community and what kind of activities are of interest to people who want to volunteer at the farm. This might be organizing public workshops, group seed orders or seed exchanges, gleaning for food banks, learning about animal care, fundraising for nutrition education outreach, or just having a set time when people can feel comfortable dropping in to the farm to ask a question. There are also several community gardens at local schools where the farm does outreach work and where volunteers are always welcome.
The kick off meeting will include a discussion about membership dues, simple officer duties for the group, how often the group wants to meet and how the members can design and enjoy group activities that further the educational mission of the farm. Membership dues will be used solely for the educational benefit of the members and the community at large at the membership’s own discretion. The farm manager will be available to advise the group about resources the farm can bring and potential educational projects.
