Sunday, Dec. 13
Mountain Meander Loop Hike ($20)—Join Park Ranger Mark Greenwood at 8 a.m. (CST) at Savage Gulf Ranger Station, 3157 SR 399, Palmer, for a 9.1-mile intermediate distance/difficulty guided hike of the Mountain Oak Loop, the east side of Savage Gulf. Be sure to bring along water and food. Wear sturdy shoes in which to hike. A flashlight is also recommended in case we are delayed until nightfall.
New Moon Night Hike at Stone Door ($10) (Please pre-register, limit 10 people)—Meet Park Ranger Spencer Baxter at 6:45 p.m. (CST) at Stone Door Ranger Station, 1183 Stone Door Rd., Beersheba Springs, for 2-mile round trip hike to include several overlooks, and to experience the night sky in beautiful Savage Gulf. Bring your own headlamp, sturdy hiking boots, appropriate clothing for the weather, and the spirit of adventure.
Tuesday, Dec. 15
Grundy Day Loop Trail Work ($0–$20 donation)— Join Ranger Dan Wescoat at 8:30 a.m. at Grundy Forest Trailhead, 131 Fiery Gizzard Rd., Tracy City, to assist in some much-needed trail improvement projects on the Grundy Forest Day Loop. Work will include digging new trail tread, moving and breaking rock, and some swinging of tools, so make sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring a pair of work gloves and eye protection. Also bring plenty of water and snacks to get you through the day and dress appropriately for the weather that day. This opportunity repeats at the same time on Wednesday, Dec. 16, and Thursday, Dec. 17.
Wednesday, Dec. 16
Rock Hop from Greeter to Boardtree Falls ($6)— Meet Park Ranger Spencer Baxter at 2:45 p.m. (CST) at Savage Gulf West Parking lot, 550 Greeter Falls Rd., Altamont, for a rock-hop hike in the bottom of the Gulf, going from Greeter Falls to Boardtree Falls. Expect to get wet on this hike. Wear appropriate footwear and clothing, water and some sun/bug protection. Children must be 15 or older to attend this hike.
The South Cumberland State Park Visitors’ Center is located on Highway 41 South between Monteagle and Tracy City and is open 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. seven days a week. For more information call (931) 924-2980.
